Cuba's Threshold: Streets, Culture, and Tourism After Castro

Writing by Eric Pottenger

Photography by Tim Klempay

What do Americans really "know" about Cuba? This was the unavoidable question both Tim Klempay and Eric Pottenger asked themselves prior to landing in Havana for an eight-day visit there in early 2007. To them, the subject of Cuba, its political institutions and its people, has always been shrouded behind restrictive Cold War ideological constructs, politically-motivated falsehoods, generations-old resentments, well-intentioned romantic dribble, not to mention the mystery that has been preserved by a forty-five year-old law preventing Americans from traveling there.

It is precisely this mystery that attracted these two Americans to Cuba, and at such a crucial time. With Fidel Castro's health and whereabouts kept secret; with his brother Raul now in power; with diplomatic policy change between Cuba and the United States appearing imminent; with American business leaders studying Cuban demographic charts, and politicians practicing the rhetoric of reconciliation, and diplomats perusing their dusty Spanish phrasebooks; with opinions informing opinions informing opinions...

What can Americans learn about Cuba? This book is a record of an attempt, an inquiry--a journey--and the photo-document of what these two Americans found.

Michigan-Texas

Stereo Photography by Tim Klempay Stereo Photography by Jackie Klempay

Using three-dimensional photography viewed with anaglyph glasses. This book examines the differences and similarities of Michigan and Texas through the dichotomy of each state being seen as a blue or red state respectively. It is a flip-book and can be viewed from either the Michigan or Texas perspective, depending on which side of the book is opened. Once the viewer chooses a state's side they get a clear three-dimensional view from that state. While on the opposite facing page the other state's image is upside-down, and due to the optics involved in three dimensional photography it looses its clarity and depth. In this way, a visual metaphor is created that examines the core of America's political system and the consciousness it creates. The book is a cross state collaboration between Tim Klempay living in Michigan and Jackie Klempay living in Texas.
